/ Getting started
The main difference is that car valeting focuses on deep cleaning, while car detailing focuses on paint restoration and long-term protection.
- Car Valeting (Deep Cleaning): A thorough, professional clean of the vehicle's interior and exterior. It restores the car to a spotless condition using deep vacuuming, steam cleaning, wheel washing, and glass polishing. Valeting does not include paint correction or long-term protective coatings.
- Car Detailing (Restoration & Protection): Goes beyond cleaning to restore and protect the vehicle's surfaces. Detailing includes full exterior paint decontamination (clay bar treatment), multi-stage paint correction to safely remove swirl marks and light scratches, and applying durable protection such as ceramic coatings, paint sealants, or premium waxes.

/ Services Explained
Car detailing is an in-depth, meticulous cleaning, restoration, and finishing of a vehicle to bring it to a like-new, showroom condition inside and out.
Unlike a standard car wash or valet — which focuses primarily on surface cleanliness — car detailing treats, protects, and restores specific materials across the entire vehicle:
- Exterior Detailing: Involves deep paint decontamination (clay bar treatment), multi-stage machine polishing to remove swirl marks and scratches, headlight restoration, engine bay cleaning, and long-term protection like ceramic coatings or paint sealants.
- Interior Detailing: Uses specialised equipment—such as hot-water extraction, steam cleaning, and leather conditioning—to deep-clean upholstery, sterilise air vents, and protect trim from UV fading.
The main objective of car detailing is to correct surface defects, restore paint clarity, and preserve your vehicle's overall condition and resale value.
Car valeting is the process of thoroughly cleaning, sanitising, and polishing a vehicle’s interior and exterior to restore it to a clean, fresh, and showroom-ready condition.
While a basic automated or hand car wash only cleans surface dirt, professional valeting uses specialised equipment, pH-neutral chemicals, and safe hand-wash techniques to clean every inch of your vehicle without scratching the paintwork.
- Exterior Deep Cleanses: Includes pre-wash snow foam, hand washing using the two-bucket method, wheel cleaning, glass polishing, tire dressing, and spray wax application.
- Interior Deep Cleanses: Includes deep vacuuming of carpets and seats, dashboard and console dusting, steam cleaning, upholstery extraction, and interior glass cleaning
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer solution based on silicon dioxide (Si02) that is hand-applied to a vehicle’s exterior. It chemically bonds with the factory clear coat to form a semi-permanent, glass-like protective shield over your paintwork.
Unlike traditional waxes or sealants that wash away after a few months, professional ceramic coatings last 2 to 5+ years, delivering durable protection and an unmatched deep gloss finish.
- Extreme Hydrophobic Effects: Creates an ultra-smooth surface that repels water, mud, and road grime, making maintenance washing far easier and faster.
- Paint & Surface Protection: Shields your vehicle’s clear coat against damaging UV rays, oxidation, bird droppings, tree sap, acid rain, and road salt.
- Enhanced Gloss & Depth: Amplifies the paint's natural color depth and clarity, giving your vehicle a permanent "wet look" shine.
Note: To ensure maximum durability and performance, a ceramic coating must be applied to decontaminated, paint-corrected surfaces in a controlled indoor environment. Explore our Ceramic Coating Packages or visit our Kingston studio to get a personalised quote.
Paint Protection Film (PPF) - is an ultra-clear, high-impact thermoplastic polyurethane film applied directly over a vehicle's paintwork. It acts as a sacrificial, physical barrier designed to absorb impacts and shield your vehicle against stone chips, scratches, road debris, and environmental damage.
Unlike ceramic coatings, which are liquid coatings applied for chemical protection and gloss, PPF is a thick physical film that offers superior impact resistance:
- Self-Healing Technology: Advanced elastomeric polymers allow minor surface scratches, swirl marks, and wash hazing to disappear automatically when exposed to heat or warm water.
- Stone Chip & Scuff Defense: Absorbs impacts from gravel, road grit, and minor parking scuffs that would otherwise chip or gouge your clear coat.
- Stain & UV Resistance: Prevents paint yellowing from solar UV exposure and guards against etching caused by bird droppings, acid rain, and road salt.
- Custom & Full Coverage Options: Can be installed on high-impact areas (such as the front bumper, bonnet, wings, and side mirrors) or applied as a full-vehicle wrap in high-gloss or satin/matte finishes.
To maximise durability, PPF can be paired with a ceramic coating top layer to combine physical impact protection with extreme water-beading performance. Explore our PPF Services or contact our Kingston studio to discuss custom coverage options.
In addition to our core valeting, detailing, ceramic coating, and PPF services, Autoshine provides a comprehensive range of specialist automotive care, enhancement, and restoration services at our Kingston studio:

/ Timing & booking
A standard car valet typically takes 3 to 4 hours, while a full package or deep restoration can take 1 full working day (6–8 hours).
- Interior & Exterior Deep Cleanses: ~3 to 4 hours (ideal if you just want the interior or exterior valeted.)
- Full Valeting & Detailing Packages: 6 to 8 hours (includes Full Interior & Exterior Deep Cleanses).
Depending on the service package, vehicle size, and paint condition, car detailing takes anywhere from 1 full working day (8 hours) up to 1 full week (5–7 days).
- Level 1 Detail (1 Working Day): Focuses on single-stage gloss enhancement, exterior decontamination, and short-term surface protection.
- Level 2 & Multi-Stage Correction (2 to 3 Days): Allows sufficient time for multi-stage machine polishing to remove 80%+ of swirl marks and deep scratch reduction.
- Ultimate Detail & Restoration (Up to 1 Week): This Detail goes even further, allowing us time to wet sand deeper defects where possible, multi stages of machine polish to make the paintwork as good as possible.
Applying a ceramic coating takes 1 to 3+ working days, depending on the level of preparation required and essential curing times.
While applying the liquid coating itself takes only a few hours, achieving a durable, permanent bond requires extensive surface preparation and climate-controlled curing:
- Preparation & Paint Correction (Day 1): The coating cannot bond properly to dirty or damaged paint. Your vehicle must first undergo one of our Detailing Services to safely remove swirl marks and surface contamination.
- Overnight Studio Curing (Day 2–3): Once applied, the vehicle must remain inside our Kingston studio overnight (12–24 hours) to allow the protective coating to fully cross-link, harden, and cure before being exposed to outside weather.
To ensure maximum coating longevity, we recommend allowing 1 to 3 days for your vehicle to be completed at our studio.
Rain will not affect your booking. We operate from a fully equipped, car valeting and detailing studio in Kingston, allowing us to complete all interior and exterior services indoors regardless of the weather.
- All-Weather Quality: Working indoors ensures wet weather never interferes with machine polishing, paint correction, or ceramic coating curing times.
- Dry Day Pick-Up: If it is raining when your valet is complete, you are welcome to leave your car with us and collect it on a dry day.
- Fully Insured Facility: Your vehicle is completely safe and fully covered by insurance while stored overnight or securely held at our Kingston premises.
You can safely drive your car in the rain 12 to 24 hours after application, but you must wait 7 full days before washing your car with any soaps or chemicals.
While applying a ceramic coating takes only a few hours, the chemical formula undergoes a multi-stage curing process:
- Driving in the Rain (12–24 Hours): Ceramic coatings are allowed to cure in our Kingston studio prior to release. Once the initial 12-hour cure is complete, rain will not harm the coating.
- Chemical Washing (Wait 7 Days): The coating needs 7 days to reach full chemical cross-linking and hardness. Using car shampoos, traffic film removers, or any car related chemicals in the first week can disrupt the bonding process and weaken durability.
- Handling Spot Contaminants: If bird droppings or tree sap land on your paint during the first 7 days, lightly mist the area with distilled water and gently blot (do not rub) using a soft microfiber towel.
Every client receives a full aftercare briefing before leaving our studio, ensuring your ceramic coating delivers maximum gloss and long-term protection.
To help us deliver the best possible finish, please remove all personal belongings, rubbish, and valuables from your vehicle prior to your scheduled appointment.
- Personal Items & Valuables: Clearing out items from the boot, glovebox, door pockets, and seats allows our team immediate access to every surface for thorough vacuuming and steam cleaning.
- Child Seats & Accessories: Please remove child car seats if you would like the upholstery/Leather underneath cleaned (for liability and safety reasons,we cannot reinstall car seats).
- Loose Items Left Behind: If any items are left in the vehicle, our team will safely collect them during the clean and return them to you in a secure bag once the valet is complete.
All car valeting and detailing services at Autoshine Car Detailing are by appointment only. However, you are always welcome to visit our Kingston studio without an appointment for a free vehicle inspection and consultation.
- Free Paint & Vehicle Inspections: Drop by our studio during business hours so we can assess your vehicle's paint condition, discuss your needs, and recommend the best valeting or detailing package.
- Securing Your Booking: Because our studio-grade cleans, paint correction, and ceramic coatings take several hours (or days) to complete, pre-booking is required to secure your dedicated time slot.

/ Other Popular Questions
Paint correction is the professional process of permanently removing surface imperfections from a vehicle's clear coat to restore paint clarity, depth, and a mirror-like shine.
Using specialised dual-action or rotary machine polishers combined with abrasive compounds and polishing pads, paint correction safely levels the top layer of clear coat to eliminate defects such as:
- Swirl Marks & Spiderwebbing: Fine circular scratches caused by improper washing or automated car washes.
- Surface Scratches: Light scratches that have not penetrated through the clear coat layer.
- Oxidation & Dullness: Weathering that causes paint to lose its gloss and color richness.
- Etching & Holograms: Marks caused by bird droppings, acid rain, or poor machine polishing techniques.
Unlike basic waxes or polishes that temporarily mask or fill scratches, paint correction permanently removes defects, making it an essential preparation step before applying a ceramic coating or paint protection film (PPF).
Yes, car detailing and ceramic coatings are well worth the investment, especially if you want to protect your vehicle’s paintwork, maintain its resale value, and make regular washing effortless.
While the upfront cost is higher than a standard car wash, high-end detailing and ceramic coatings pay for themselves over time in three key ways:
- Preserves Vehicle Resale Value: A car with clean, swirl-free paint, healthy clear coat, and immaculate upholstery commands a significantly higher trade-in or private resale price compared to a neglected vehicle.
- Long-Term Paint Protection: Ceramic coatings form a semi-permanent barrier against costly environmental damage—such as bird dropping etching, UV oxidation, road salt, and tree sap—preventing expensive clear-coat degradation or respray work.
- Saves Time & Washing Effort: The extreme hydrophobic (water-repellent) properties mean dirt, grime, and brake dust struggle to bond to the paint, making routine maintenance washes up to 50% faster.
If you plan on keeping your car long-term, driving a high-value vehicle, or returning a leased car in pristine condition, detailing and ceramic coatings offer unbeatable value. Explore our Ceramic Coating Packages or visit our Kingston studio for a free paint assessment.
